A Resource for Designers & Retailers to Share with Clients
Vacuuming may seem simple, but using the right method for the right rug can make a world of difference in its longevity and appearance. As a designer or retailer, educating your clients on rug care not only protects their investment—it builds trust and satisfaction.
Here’s a client-friendly guide you can pass along after a sale, during an install, or as part of your maintenance recommendations.
1. Tufted Wool Rugs
Often mass-produced (India/China), tufted rugs are budget-friendly but may be made with lower-quality wool and latex backing that breaks down over time.
Signs of Wear:
- Shedding into the vacuum
- Surface fuzz
- Brittle or chalky texture
Client Care Tips:
- Avoid upright vacuums or beater bars—these pull and damage fibers
- Recommend a canister vacuum with brush off, or a handheld upholstery tool
- Always vacuum with the pile direction
- Use an electric sweeper for light dusting
- Important: Never flip tufted rugs to vacuum the back—this damages the glue
2. Shag Rugs
High-pile, luxurious, and visually bold—shag rugs require extra care.
Challenges:
- Dirt sinks deep between long fibers
- Loose tufts can be pulled out by vacuuming
Client Care Tips:
- Shake face-down outdoors (best done with help)
- Use a wet/dry shop vac gently between rows
- If tufts pull out, vacuum with caution—or skip vacuuming altogether
- Optional: Fluff with a wide-toothed dog brush or tumble (no heat) in a professional rug tumbler
3. Woven Rugs
Woven rugs are built to last—many survive generations when well cared for.
Flatweaves & Thin Pile:
- Use a carpet sweeper or upholstery vacuum tool
- Vacuum with the pile, or across the width for flatweaves
Thicker Wovens:
- Beater bar off, or raised to the highest setting
- Weekly vacuuming is ideal
- Quarterly: vacuum the back side to loosen embedded grit—but avoid the fringe
4. Silk & Faux Silk Rugs
Real silk is durable but delicate. Faux silk (viscose, bamboo silk, banana silk) is much more fragile and prone to shedding and staining.
Client Care Tips:
- Use suction only—never brushes or beaters
- Vacuum in the direction of the pile
- Upright vacuums should be avoided altogether
- Spot clean with care—professional cleaning is recommended
⏱ How Often Should Clients Vacuum?
If the rug is used regularly and professionally cleaned within the past 12–24 months:
Recommend weekly vacuuming to maintain appearance and prevent wear from embedded grit.
When to Recommend Professional Cleaning
Clients should seek professional cleaning (done off-site, never in-home) every 1–2 years, or sooner if they notice:
- High-traffic lanes forming
- Stains, spills, or pet accidents
- Ongoing shedding
- Odor or dull appearance
Protecting the Investment
For clients who want to extend rug life and reduce long-term maintenance, recommend a professional-grade fiber protection treatment like ZebraSeal.
- Minimizes staining
- Reduces chemical usage during cleaning
- Extends useful rug life
- Cuts down on textile waste
- Offers peace of mind in high-traffic areas or homes with kids/pets
